Case Study
Overview
Helping train drivers familiarise themselves with new environments is an essential part of their ongoing training.
In Melbourne along the busy Lilydale train line the Government is removing three level crossings and building three new stations. Work on the line is expected to be finished over the next two years.
In preparation for opening of the new stations we created a 3D virtual environment to showcase the new infrastructure and demonstrate any changes including signals, trenching and viaduct works. The 3D virtual environment included 5.5 kilometres of rail corridor including Ringwood East, Croydon and Lilydale stations along with all other rail assets within the corridor. Both trains driver's perspective and elevated views were simulated of the total project areas.
Challenge
Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) was looking for a way to familiarise their drivers with any changes to the network ahead of physically being able to walk the line and see the built infrastructure.
Providing their drivers, signallers and controllers with an accurate preview would increase familiarity and thus safety and ensure personnel is ready for commissioning as soon as the infrastructure is completed.

Solution
Using a mix of photo-mesh captured data we worked with the design team at Jacobs to create the finished product.
This enabled us to create a suite of videos that would complement any driver training by getting the drivers familiar with any changes to the network.
Results
The result was a technically accurate and visually astonishing visualisation of the new infrastructure. With a myriad of uses it primarily now serves the needs of the MTM driver training team which uses it to complement its training methods.
This product will save MTM money, time and resources.
